Academic Village (2001)
Construction for Nike and Hercules Housing Communities was completed for residents before the beginning of
the 2001-2002 academic school year. The growth within the university in the past decade pushed the need for
additional on-campus housing. This fourth set of on-campus housing is located on the South side of campus
behind the Recreation and Wellness Center. Dorm style apartments similar to Libra Community are for
freshmen, and apartment-style housing like Lake Claire Community are reserved for upper-classmen. Nike and
Hercules Communities have both dorm style and apartment-style housing. Amenities in other on-campus housing
are also available for residents in Academic Village. Hercules offers students two laundry rooms, food
vending machines, and mailboxes. Each community has their own commons area for students to use at their
leisure.
The Department of First Year Advising frequents the common areas at the start and end of each term, along
with weekly advisors to help students make the best academic decisions. Special parking permits are required
for Academic Village residents in order to provide students living in the community adequate parking spaces.
The United Resident Student Association also has their role in the communities. Monthly events are held in
the quad area between the two communities and always draw big crowds of residents and student passer-by
coming from the gym. Despite being at the far end of campus, some students enjoy being close to the
Recreation and Wellness Center, its leisure pool, volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts.
